 On October 7, 2022, John P. Mullen of Lexington,  passed away in his 99th year. He was born in Everett, attended public schools in Medford,  Boston College and graduated from Northeastern University (BSEE/MEM). During WWII he served in the US Army Air Forces, flying thirty missions over Germany as a B-17 radio operator and aerial gunner.  He was was awarded the European Campaign ribbon with two battle stars and the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters as well as the WWII Victory and National Service Medals.

He was recalled to the fledgling US Air Force in 1951.  During the Korean War, he served as an electronic countermeasures officer on a B-36 aircraft in the Strategic Air Command (SAC). Following this, he was assigned to the Aircraft Radiation Laboratory in Dayton Ohio where he helped develop electronic countermeasure devices and systems. After his military service, he was employed at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratory (AFCRL), where his research included radar countermeasures, military systems analysis, radio astronomy and ionospheric effects on radio communications. His work took him to Europe, Asia, Africa, Central America, South America and the Arctic. He was author of many journal articles in his fields of endeavor.  He was a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and the Eighth Air Force Historical Association. He operated amateur radio station W1SZH for over sixty years.

John was married for 67 years to the late Eileen O'Connor, with whom he enjoyed adult education, foreign travel and gourmet cooking. He is survived by a son John P. Mullen II and his wife Katherine of Westport MA, and a daughter Merita Mullen and her husband Brian Aldrich of Acton MA. John also leaves behind four grandchildren (Elisabeth Mullen, Gillian Rafuse, John Peter Mullen III, and Katherine Rafuse) as well as two great grandchildren (Calvin and Charlie Melhorn).

Memorial visiting hours will be held at the Douglass Funeral Home 51 Worthen Rd Lexington on Thursday October 27 from 4 to 6 pm.  A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Brigid Church 1981 Mass Ave Lexington on Friday October 28 at 10 AM. Interment at Westview Cemetery will follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation in his honor may be made to Doctors Without Borders (www.DoctorsWithoutBorders.org) or the Pine Street Inn (www.Pinstreetinn.org).
